As Apple’s high profile privacy battle with the FBI continues, it has been reported that Facebook and other tech firms are planning to broaden encryption of the data of their users.
Facebook has already publicly revealed its support for Apple regarding user privacy. Now, The Guardian reports having learned that Facebook’s messaging service WhatsApp, which has about one billion monthly users, intends to encrypt voice calls and so add to its previously enacted privacy safeguards. Facebook is also said to be considering boosting the security of its Messenger app.
The report further claims that Snapchat is busy developing its own secure messaging system, while Google is “exploring extra uses for the technology behind a long-in-the-works encrypted email project.” Last month, it was revealed that Google’s parent company Alphabet intended to, jointly with Facebook and Microsoft, file a court motion backing Apple in its tussle with the FBI.
