First Impressions of Mountain Lion

OS X Mountain Lion was finally released yesterday by Apple after much speculation on the eventual date. While some had thought it would be earlier, it ended taking nearly until the end of the month. Personal opinion is that to determine whether it was worth it or not will take a little time yet.

Mountain Lion is a long download, but cheap considering the usual Mac software upgrades. It’s only $20, but it doesn’t offer as much of an upgrade as Lion did. Either way, it’s still a far cry from the updates of the past that were $80 to $120 or so. It’s a vast improvement!

The download takes awhile from start to finish, at least an hour to download, then another half hour or so to upload, but it’s nice to be able to do it through download and not have to either drive to a store or have it shipped out. My gas tank and mailman thank Apple for this.

As far as the features, I’m still checking those out. Everything is so interconnected now, and I had much of that turned off on my MacBook, as I do most of my work and leisure computing via my iPad. I haven’t figured it out yet, but it might take a complete reboot, which I’m dreading.

What I do like is the new Mail interface that looks much like the same on iOS. I can get that working, but what is getting confusing is the interconnectivity of the mail, contacts, calendar, notes, messages, and reminders of all the accounts. Previously there was just one set of that on each iOS device. Now you can have multiple versions of it. Part of the failure of this is my email not working correctly though. There are just too many things to have to go back to to find the problem.

All in all, though, I expect it to be worth it in the long run to be able to connect everything. It’s just going to take awhile to untangle old messes first!
