Instagram Adds Mentions, Links and Boomerang to Stories

Instagram’s Stories is getting a few new features to differentiate it from the Snapchat Stories that originally inspired it. From today, Instagram users will be able to mention other users, link to webpages and post looping videos, captured with the Boomerang tool, to Stories.

At least to begin with, only verified users will be able to attach hyperlinks to individual Stories, reports The Verge. Once a link is added, it will appear as the words “see more” at the foot of the Story. Tap or swipe up these words and the linked webpage will open in Instagram’s in-app browser.

However, all users will have the option of the new mentions and Boomerang functionality. With the former, you can use a snap’s type tool to type “@” before selecting from the subsequently appearing list of your common contacts. By doing this, you can tag a friend in the Story, and an Instagram direct message will notify that user.

Another fresh feature available to everyone is the built-in Boomerang functionality. Like the stand-alone Boomerang app released in October 2015 and shortly thereafter reviewed by AppleMagazine, this lets you make looping videos reminiscent of the Live Photos possible with the iPhone 6S, 6S Plus, SE, 7 and 7 Plus.

The iPhone version of the Instagram app is freely available from the iOS App Store.
