iOS 17 Rumored to Discontinue Support for iPhone X & Older Models

Apple is anticipated to showcase its new iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2023 event, scheduled to commence on June 5. Speculation surrounding the upcoming updates suggests the inclusion of a next-generation CarPlay experience, enhanced Siri, support for Appleโ€™s mixed-reality headset, and alternative app stores in specific regions.

An anonymous Twitter user has shared information about the devices that will be compatible with iOS 17, stating that the update will be suited for the iPhone XR and newer models.

According to the leak, iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 will not be compatible with the following devices:

  • iPhone 8
  • iPhone 8 Plus
  • iPhone X
  • iPad (5th generation)
  • 9.7-inch iPad Pro (1st generation)
  • 12.9-inch iPad Pro (1st generation)

It seems that devices from 2018 and earlier will not receive support from the upcoming iOS and iPadOS updates, likely due to their processors being unable to handle the new features.

In contrast to iOS 14, which launched during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, information about iOS 17 features remains scarce. Current claims suggest that the update will be more extensive than previously thought, with a primary focus on improvements and bug fixes.

The new update is expected to enhance Siri, redesign iMessage with a fresh interface and chatrooms, support Appleโ€™s mixed-reality headset, and enable sideloading.

Apple typically announces new operating systems at its WWDC event in June and initiates beta testing for new updates on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac, and Apple TV with developers and beta testers to iron out issues and fix bugs.

The new updates are then typically released to the public in September, following the announcement of the latest iPhone. As a result, the iOS 17 release date is projected to be in September 2023.
