Excitement is building around Apple’s upcoming iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max models, which are rumored to offer significantly faster charging speeds. According to a recent report from ITHome, the iPhone 16 Pro will support 20W charging with MagSafe and 40W wired fast charging.
Charging Speed Enhancements
Currently, all four iPhone 15 models support wired fast charging speeds of 27 watts when using a compatible power adapter. This enables users to charge their iPhone up to 50 percent in approximately 30 minutes. MagSafe charging for the iPhone 15 series maxes out at 15W.
If the latest rumors are accurate, the iPhone 16 Pro’s 40W wired fast charging marks a substantial increase in speed. The enhanced MagSafe charging at 20W will also be a welcome improvement for many users.
Larger Batteries
However, the increase in charging speeds will come with larger battery capacities in the iPhone 16 Pro models compared to their predecessors. Here are the battery capacities for the iPhone 15 lineup:
- iPhone 15: 3,349 mAh
- iPhone 15 Plus: 4,383 mAh
- iPhone 15 Pro: 3,274 mAh
- iPhone 15 Pro Max: 4,422 mAh
And here are the rumored capacities for the iPhone 16 models:
- iPhone 16: 3,561 mAh (up 6.3%)
- iPhone 16 Plus: 4,006 mAh (down 8.6%)
- iPhone 16 Pro: 3,355 mAh (up 2.5%)
- iPhone 16 Pro Max: 4,676 mAh (up 5.7%)
Energy Density and Replaceability
Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has reported that the iPhone 16’s battery will have greater energy density. Additionally, Apple is allegedly testing new ways to make the iPhone 16 battery easier to replace, partly due to a new metal casing on the battery. This could mean more efficient energy use and potentially longer battery life, alongside the improved charging speeds.
Fast Charging Requirements
For those looking to fast charge their current iPhone 15 or any iPhone model dating back to the iPhone 8, Apple recommends using a USB-C cable or a USB-C to Lightning cable along with one of the following adapters:
- Apple 18W, 20W, 29W, 30W, 35W, 61W, 67W, 87W, 96W, or 140W USB-C Power Adapter
- A comparable third-party USB-C power adapter that supports USB Power Delivery (USB-PD)
Apple’s 35W dual USB-C port adapter, known for its compact design, is a personal favorite among many users. Satechi’s multi-port wall plugs are also popular choices for efficient charging solutions.
As rumors continue to circulate about the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, the prospect of significantly faster charging speeds is generating considerable anticipation. With enhanced battery capacities and potentially easier battery replacement, Apple is poised to deliver a compelling upgrade with its next-generation iPhone models. Stay tuned for more updates as we approach the official launch.
