Skinned Face “Selfies” BODY WORLDS “Under Your Skin” App Premiers Free Photo App to Replicate Plastinates NEW YORK, Oct. 30, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — On the eve of Halloween, BODY WORLDS has launched its first-ever app, allowing users to explore human anatomy in a fun and playful way by transforming photos to the skinned faces of the world-famous plastinates. The Under Your Skin app, developed by Sandbox Digital Playground, is currently available for free download at the Apple iTunes Store.

Users begin by taking a photo of their face, or the face of a friend, on their iPhone, iPad or other Apple-enabled device within the app. Using the blue dotted guide, users adjust the guide to fit the eyes and mouth of the image. Once the overlay is set, the effects meld the image with an avatar of a plastinates that users can filter through. The 11 plastinate filters, taken from actual plastinates in the BODY WORLDS: PULSE exhibit at Discovery Times Square in New York City, range from pure bone skeleton to muscle and cartilage and blood vessels, allowing the user to see firsthand what lies beneath the skin’s surface transforming photos into a Halloween-ready disguise. Favorite photos can be shared within the app to Facebook, Twitter, e-mail or saved into the user’s photo gallery.

BODY WORLDS is an international anatomical science exhibition that displays preserved human bodies through a process called Plastination, which reveals inner anatomical structures. The exhibit, BODY WORLDS: PULSE, which consists of more than 200 specimens transformed through Plastination, highlights the challenges the body faces while navigating the 21st century, and is now open at Discovery Times Square (www.discoverytsx.com).

About BODY WORLDS Invented by Dr. Gunther von Hagens in 1977, the Plastination process replaces natural fluids in anatomical specimens with liquid reactive plastics that are hardened and cured with gas, light, or heat. Before hardening, the plastinates are set in poses that illustrate how our bodies internally respond to everyday movements and activities. Plastination provides the flexibility and strength needed to display and preserve the specimens in their true-to-life form, without the use of glass barriers or formaldehyde. Gunther von Hagens’ BODY WORLDS exhibitions stem from an established body donation program that relies on donor consent. The specimens on display, excluding a small number from anatomical collections and anatomy programs, stem from a body donation program that was begun in 1983 by Dr. von Hagens.
