Steve Jobs was reportedly intent on bringing dramatic changes to TV with the Apple TV. Apple could be on the verge of doing that even in his absence, as AppFigures has revealed that the latest Apple TV’s App Store already offers over 2,600 apps.
The blog reported that the specific number, at the time it was writing, was 2,624. This is an impressive figure given that the fourth generation Apple TV, the first model in the product line to come with the tvOS App Store under study, only launched in late October.
AppFigures has also looked closely at differences between the apps, noting that 1,002 apps – about 38% of the total number – are in the Games category. This is surprising, but not as much as it could have been – as the set-top box’s gaming capabilities were given particularly strong attention during the September keynote at which the product was announced.
Citing the “pretty steady rate of growth so far”, AppFigures has estimated that the number of available tvOS apps should hit 5,000 in about a month, before reaching 10,000 early in the new year.
