Preorders for New iPhones Open Today, But Some Supplies Low

Preordering the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus is now possible in 12 territories around the world. However, you should move particularly quickly if you want a new iPhone in rose gold, as many shipping estimates for this color have slipped to 2-3 weeks, indicating dwindling supplies.

The new iPhones have understandably triggered a lot of excitement since being officially unveiled by Apple on Wednesday. The most publicized new inclusion is the 3D Touch display, which opens up various new touch gestures to make the interface even more intuitive. Preorders of the new phones through Apple’s website became available from 12:01 Pacific Daylight Time today.

Though the vast majority of models, particularly 16GB models in silver, space gray and gold, remain available for shipping for September 25, many rose gold iPhones, especially with 64GB and 128GB storage, will now be delivered in what is predicted to be weeks.

So far, it is difficult to assess whether Apple is likely to break its current record of first-day iPhone preorders, which stands at over 4 million for last year’s iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. There is evidence that the company has ordered units of the new iPhones in much larger numbers than for the predecessor handsets about a year earlier. This suggests that shipping estimates should not be considered a reliable sign of precisely how many units have been preordered today.
