Samsung planning to drop power adapters from smartphones

Samsung is reportedly planning to remove power adapters from its smartphones.

The company will follow Apple in removing power adapters from the boxes of new devices in an attempt to both reduce the costs involved in shipping and for environmental benefits, too.

It’s somewhat embarrassing for Samsung, however, as the firm mocked Apple’s decision to remove power adapters from the iPhone 12 in a social media post in October. The post did not age well, and two months later, the South Korean company is planning to do the same.

According to regulators, Samsung will remove the power adapter and headphones from the box of its new Samsung S21 devices, with Tecnoblog first reporting the changes.

Documents related to the new device confirms that three new models will go on sale, and none will ship with headphones or a charger. Like Apple, they’ll still be sold separately online and in-store.

When Apple dropped power adapters from its iPhone boxes earlier in the year, the company said it was for environmental reasons, but some argued that it was to help Apple cut costs as it transitioned to 5G chips.

With Samsung and perhaps other manufacturers following suit, it’s good news for the planet, but bad news for consumers who need a new power brick or headphones – they’ll now need to purchase them separately or choose a third-party.

This is not the first time that Samsung has followed in Apple’s footsteps after mocking a change to its offering. Indeed, when Apple removed the headphone jack from its iPhones, Samsung released an ad mocking the decision, before doing the same a year later.

Are you pleased to see Samsung following suit? Do you think these changes will really have an impact on the environment? Let us know and check back soon for more news.
