Special Apple Watch Sport Models Set for Chinese New Year

Apple is seeking to tempt many Chinese people to splash out on an Apple Watch, with some new Apple Watch Sport models intended for release exclusively for the Chinese New Year period.

According to Mashable, these new models will be available in yellow gold or silver aluminum casing and red bands. Red is commonly worn by the Chinese for annual Chinese New Year celebrations, as the color is believed to keep evil spirits and bad fortune at bay.

Chinese New Year will fall on February 8 this year, and mark the Year of the Monkey. However, the occasion is routinely celebrated for several days after the one formal date.

Gold, too, is a popular color in China; Apple long ago introduced gold as a color option for its iPhones and iPads as China became an increasingly crucial market for the Cupertino company.

These new Apple Watch Sport models will be available strictly in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia between January 15 and February 22. Prices vary by country, but are close to that of the standard Apple Watch Sport, starting from S$518 for the 38mm and S$598 for the 42mm version.
