Twitter is set to soon give its users more flexibility by removing photos and links from the 140-character limit for tweets. This will, obviously, enable users to compose longer messages.
While Twitter has not made any official announcement about this impending change, “a person familiar with the matter” has imparted the news to Bloomberg. This source, who asked not to be named, said that the change could be just two weeks away.
Right now, putting a link in a tweet will take up 23 characters of the limit, even after Twitter has automatically shortened the link. A photo, meanwhile, takes up 24 characters.
Though the company declined to comment on the story following contact from Bloomberg, it seems likely that Twitter could be at least mulling over this move, considering the rather experimental spirit the company has shown under current CEO Jack Dorsey, who took over permanently in October.
In January, Twitter was reportedly considering lifting its character limit per tweet from 140 to 10,000 characters; however, Dorsey has since said that the limit will not be changed after all.
