Apple TV+ has ordered a new live-action series, featuring Godzilla and the Titans. The as-yet-untitled series will take place in the Godzilla MonsterVerse, and looks set to follow the thread set up in Godzilla vs. Kong, the organization “Monarch” that seems interested in exploiting the Titans.
Rumors suggest that the TV+ series looks set to pick up where Godzilla vs. Kong left off, with Monarch having established an observation post in the Hollow Earth, where Kong now rules, although Apple is describing the series as an original.
Currently, Apple is describing the series as an exploration of one family’s journey to “uncover its buried secrets and a legacy linking them to the secret organization known as Monarch”. Some critics are concerned that this means Apple may be doubling down on what is considered the MonsterVerse’s weakest aspect – its human cast.
Legendary Television will be producing the series, with Chris Black (who will also serve as showrunner) and Matt Fraction serving as executive producers. Safehouse Pictures’ Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell and Toho Co. Ltd’s Hiro Matsuoka and Takemasa Arita will exec-produce on behalf of their respective studios.
If Fraction’s involvement is similar to his most recent output, we can expect a full adventure, as opposed to a turgid melodrama. And really, we want to see the budget for this series pumped into creating action sequences for the King of Monsters and his Titan friends.
This is not the only monster-based show making its way to the small screen. Netflix is debuting an animated series, Skull Island, based on Kong’s solo outing in 2017. Perhaps the MonsterVerse will become the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) of the small screen?
