Volvo Apple Music integration is beginning to reach more than two million vehicles through an over-the-air software update. The native app lets drivers access their subscriptions directly from the center display without connecting an iPhone or opening Apple Music through CarPlay.

The rollout covers a wide selection of Volvo cars equipped with Google built-in, including vehicles produced from model year 2020 onward. Availability will vary by model and market as Volvo distributes the software in stages.

Once installed, drivers can sign in with their Apple Account to access saved music, personal playlists and Apple Music radio. Playback can be managed through the touchscreen or supported voice controls, allowing the service to operate like other apps installed within Volvo’s infotainment environment.

The forthcoming Volvo EX60 will take a different approach. Apple Music will be preinstalled when the first customer deliveries begin during summer 2026 rather than arriving through a later update.

Volvo Apple Music Works Without an iPhone Connection

The native integration removes the need to route music through a connected smartphone. The vehicle handles the app, interface and streaming connection through its built-in infotainment system.

This approach provides access to Apple Music even when a driver does not connect an iPhone before beginning a journey. Existing subscribers can sign in and find the same library and playlists associated with their accounts on other devices.

Users joining Apple Music from another streaming platform can also transfer eligible songs, albums and personally created playlists. Apple’s transfer system searches its catalog for matching tracks and flags alternatives when an exact version cannot be found.

The Volvo app includes access to Apple Music’s catalog of more than 100 million songs, curated playlists and live radio stations. The experience remains ad-free for subscribers.

Native integration also gives Volvo greater control over how Apple Music appears beside navigation, vehicle settings and other media sources. The company recently introduced a redesigned Volvo Car UX that places commonly used functions on the home screen and reduces the number of taps required to switch between maps, media and phone controls.

Drivers following a route can change music without fully leaving the navigation view. Recently used apps also appear within a contextual bar that adjusts according to the driving situation.

Models Eligible for the Software Update

Volvo says the update is planned for 11 model lines equipped with its supported Google-based infotainment platform:

  • EX90
  • ES90
  • XC90
  • S90
  • V90
  • XC60
  • S60
  • V60
  • XC40
  • EX40
  • EC40

Eligible vehicles begin with model year 2020, although not every configuration or market will receive the update simultaneously. Volvo advises owners to keep their vehicles current with previous software releases and maintain an active data connection for over-the-air installation.

A vehicle that has missed earlier updates may require assistance from an authorized Volvo service center before it can receive the newest software. Service-center installation can involve a charge depending on the situation and market.

The older XC40 Recharge and C40 naming may also appear differently depending on the production year. Volvo subsequently renamed those electric models EX40 and EC40, but eligibility depends on the infotainment platform and software configuration rather than the badge alone.

The EX60 will join the supported range at launch. The electric SUV is based on Volvo’s new SPA3 architecture and uses HuginCore, the company’s system combining its own software with technology from Google, Nvidia and Qualcomm.

Spatial Audio Comes to Selected Volvo Models

Apple Music Spatial Audio powered by Dolby Atmos will be available in selected Volvo cars equipped with an optional Bowers & Wilkins sound system.

In the United States, Volvo specifically identifies the EX60 and EX90 as supporting the immersive format. International materials also include the ES90, though equipment and feature availability can differ by country.

Dolby Atmos mixes can position instruments and vocals across multiple channels around the cabin rather than limiting playback to a conventional left-and-right stereo field. The effect depends on the recording, speaker configuration and acoustic calibration of the vehicle.

Volvo says its newer electric models benefit from extensive soundproofing that lowers outside noise inside the cabin. Their Bowers & Wilkins systems are tuned for the dimensions and materials of each interior rather than installed as identical speaker packages across the range.

Spatial Audio is not required to use the native Apple Music app. Owners of other eligible models can still access regular songs, playlists and radio through their available sound systems.

Up to Three Months of Apple Music Included

Volvo is offering an introductory subscription through the Volvo Cars mobile app for customers who meet Apple Music’s eligibility requirements.

New Apple Music subscribers can receive three months free. Returning subscribers who have been without a subscription for at least one month can receive two months, explaining Volvo’s description of the promotion as offering “up to” three months.

The offer can be redeemed until July 6, 2027. An eligible car must be connected to the Volvo Cars app before the promotion can be claimed.

Existing Apple Music members do not need a separate automotive subscription. They can sign in to the native app with the Apple Account already attached to their current plan.

The rollout extends Apple Music across vehicles that have already spent several years on the road, demonstrating how infotainment features are becoming less dependent on the original factory configuration. Volvo previously used a large software release to bring its redesigned interface to approximately 2.5 million vehicles across 85 countries.

The EX60 will provide the most elaborate version of the new music experience. Its available Bowers & Wilkins system uses 28 speakers, including headrest speakers for all four main seating positions, with Apple Music and Dolby Atmos ready from the vehicle’s first delivery.
