Apple is venturing into the development of a new iMac that would be significantly larger than any of its predecessors, boasting a screen size of over 30 inches, as reported by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. As mentioned in Gurman’s Power On weekly newsletter, this colossal iMac is still in the initial stages of development and might take a year or two before it makes its public debut.
Apple’s innovative endeavor is intended to create an “iMac with a screen over 30 inches,” according to Gurman’s report. However, further specifics regarding the project remain undisclosed at this point.
As of now, apart from refurbished models, a 24-inch screen is the largest size offered by the iMac series. This is after Apple phased out the Intel-based 27-inch iMac and the iMac Pro over the last couple of years. The iMac Pro has been a subject of ongoing speculation regarding its potential return, yet no Apple silicon version has been introduced in the larger iMac category. A workaround for consumers seeking a larger display is to connect a 27-inch Studio Display to a Mac with Apple silicon, albeit without the convenience of an all-in-one setup.
Launched in April 2021, the 24-inch iMac showcases a vibrant, ultra-slim design powered by the M1 chip. Gurman predicts an upgrade for this model, proposing an M3 chip integration by early next year. Apple’s existing silicon chips are crafted using TSMC’s 5nm process, but the anticipated M3 chip is speculated to switch to a 3nm process, promising considerable enhancements in performance and power efficiency.
Gurman’s report also hints at an array of products that Apple might have in its pipeline. One such product is the second-generation Apple Watch Ultra, expected to be launched later this year. This indicates that the luxury variant of the watch might join the annual update cycle like other models in the lineup.
