Apple has taken the wraps off its latest iPhones — the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. Both models maintain the 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays of their predecessors, but with a remarkable enhancement: the screens can now reach a maximum brightness of 2,000 nits. The new iPhones will be available for pre-order this Friday and are slated to launch on September 22.
The color palette of these devices has been revamped, as the color is now integrated throughout the glass, providing vibrant and unique finishes. The iPhone 15 is available in an array of colors including pink, yellow, green, blue, and black. The camera system has also been overhauled, now featuring a 48-megapixel main sensor, previously only seen in the iPhone 14 Pro series. This sensor facilitates 1x and 2x optical zoom capabilities in addition to the usual 0.5x ultra-wide lens.
The iPhone 15 series offers a more advanced Portrait mode, boasting improved low-light performance and an automatic enablement feature when the main camera identifies a subject. Users can also modify the focus post-capture, thanks to the saved depth map, which allows for natural blur adjustments.
Under the hood, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus come with the A16 Bionic chip, a six-core CPU, and a five-core GPU, which originally debuted in the iPhone 14 Pro models. The battery life remains consistent with the previous generation for the iPhone 15, while the iPhone 15 Plus benefits from a larger internal battery for extended longevity. Charging these devices has been made more convenient with the introduction of a USB-C port, replacing the traditional Lightning connector.
Enhancements also extend to the connectivity suite, as the second-generation Ultra-Wideband chip is incorporated for improved range and Precision Finding capabilities. Users can now navigate directly to individuals, in addition to locating items tagged with AirTags. Furthermore, Apple’s Emergency SOS via Satellite is expanded to include roadside assistance, a feature that will be accessible to AAA members in the United States. Apple is offering the Emergency SOS service for free for two years with every iPhone 15 purchase, though subsequent pricing details have not been disclosed.
Both the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will be available starting September 22, with pricing beginning at $799 for the iPhone 15 and $899 for the iPhone 15 Plus.
