High iOS adoption rates continue in 2019, as new figures show that 83% of users with an iPhone or iPad released in the past four years has updated to Apple’s iOS 12.
Less than five months after its launch, the operating system now has a significant market share amongst devices like the iPhone XS, XS Max, XR, X, 8, 8 Plus, 7, and 7 Plus.
As iOS 12 was the biggest release in Apple history, offering installs on devices up to five and six years old, the Cupertino firm has been presenting adoption data in two formats – one for recent devices and combining new and older devices, to give a fairer representation of the current adoption rates.
Although 83% of devices from the past four years now run on iOS 12, a lower 80% of all iOS devices now run iOS 12 – still, that’s a significant chunk of the userbase and demonstrates Apple’s ability to package new releases and promote them in a way that encourages users to upgrade.
Android, on the other hand, is fragmented, with users running tens of OS versions.
12% of devices still run iOS 11, according to Apple’s new data, whilst just 5% of devices from the past four years run an older version of iOS.
At the start of 2019, just 78% of devices were running iOS 12, meaning adoption has grown more than 5% in just a few short weeks.
Since 2019, Apple has released iOS 12.1.13 and iOS 12.1.14 and is expected to release the iOS 12.2 operating system in the coming weeks, an OS currently in public beta.
The new release will bring changes to Apple News ahead of a subscription service, new AirPlay 2 features, new Animoji, and more. It’s expected to be the last major release until iOS 13.
