Apple is reportedly planning an “extreme sports” version of its Apple Watch Series 8.
The company had been rumored to release a “rugged” Apple Watch this year to appeal to hikers and those taking part in extreme sports, and we now have more information on what’s to come. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has suggested that the model, which will be announced at this year’s September Event, will be aimed at athletes, hikers, and othr sports enthusiasts.
The idea is to create a smartwatch that can better withstand extreme conditions and help Apple compete against premium brands like Garmin. The new watch will feature a slightly larger screen than the Apple Watch Series 7, and sport a new metal casing to withstand knocks and dents.
The new watch will have a screen that’s 7% larger than the current Series 7 model, and the company may use the additional space to show off more fitness metrics.
We don’t yet know what the company will call the watch, but with Apple expected to use a new metal and a shatter-resistant screen, it could receive the Apple Watch Pro moniker.
This new model will sit alongside the Apple Watch Series 8, also expected to be announced this year, with a design refresh. Apple also sells the more affordable Apple Watch SE, and there has been a suggestion that this model will see some changes this year, too. The new Series 8 and rugged edition will feature an S8 chip and better support for low-power mode.
