Apple has introduced the latest 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models featuring the all-new M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. The update focuses on higher CPU and GPU performance, expanded unified memory bandwidth, significantly faster SSD speeds, and deeper on-device AI capabilities. With this generation, Apple positions MacBook Pro as a high-performance laptop designed for demanding professional workflows and AI-driven tasks.
Blazing Performance With M5 Pro and M5 Max
At the center of the new MacBook Pro are M5 Pro and M5 Max, built using Apple’s updated Fusion Architecture. The design combines two dies into a single system on a chip, increasing computational density and throughput.
M5 Pro and M5 Max introduce a new CPU architecture featuring up to 18 cores, including six high-performance cores and twelve efficiency-focused performance cores optimized for multithreaded workloads. Apple states the new chips deliver up to 30 percent faster overall performance compared to the previous generation.
Graphics performance also advances with a next-generation GPU that includes a Neural Accelerator inside each core. This design significantly increases AI and machine learning throughput. Apple reports up to 4x AI performance compared to the prior generation and up to 8x AI performance compared to M1 models.
For AI-focused workloads such as large language model prompt processing and AI image generation, the gains are substantial. Apple cites up to 6.9x faster LLM prompt processing compared to M1 Pro models and up to 8x faster AI image generation versus M1 Max systems.
Unified memory bandwidth also increases dramatically. M5 Pro supports up to 64GB of unified memory with up to 307GB/s bandwidth, while M5 Max scales to 128GB with up to 614GB/s bandwidth. These increases benefit complex 3D rendering, video effects processing, AI training tasks, and massive dataset manipulation.
Faster Storage and Expanded Starting Capacity
The new MacBook Pro delivers up to 2x faster SSD read and write speeds compared to the previous generation, reaching up to 14.5GB/s. For professionals working with 4K and 8K video, large AI models, or high-resolution asset libraries, storage throughput directly affects export times and project load speeds.
Apple also raises the baseline storage configuration. MacBook Pro with M5 Pro now starts at 1TB, while M5 Max models begin at 2TB. The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 also comes standard with 1TB of storage.
Battery Life, Connectivity, and Display
Despite the significant performance gains, Apple maintains up to 24 hours of battery life. The new models support fast charging to 50 percent in approximately 30 minutes using a 96W or higher USB-C power adapter.
Connectivity expands with three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI supporting up to 8K output, an SDXC card slot, and MagSafe 3. M5 Pro models support up to two high-resolution external displays, while M5 Max models can drive up to four.
Wireless performance benefits from the Apple-designed N1 chip, enabling Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 for improved reliability and throughput.
The Liquid Retina XDR display remains a core feature, offering up to 1600 nits peak HDR brightness and up to 1000 nits for SDR content. A nano-texture option is available for reduced glare in bright environments.
On-Device AI and macOS Tahoe
The new MacBook Pro is designed around on-device AI performance. With Neural Accelerators embedded within the GPU architecture and increased unified memory bandwidth, users can run advanced language models locally without relying entirely on cloud infrastructure.
macOS Tahoe introduces expanded Spotlight capabilities, enhanced Shortcuts with intelligent actions, integrated Live Translation in Messages and FaceTime, and developer access to Foundation Models for on-device AI workflows. Continuity features allow cellular calls and Live Activities from iPhone to appear directly on Mac.
Availability and Pricing
The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro starts at $2,199 (U.S.), while the 16-inch version begins at $2,699. M5 Max configurations start at $3,599 for the 14-inch and $3,899 for the 16-inch model. The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 begins at $1,699. Models are available in space black and silver.
Pre-orders begin March 4, with availability starting March 11.
The new MacBook Pro represents a substantial performance leap in Apple’s silicon roadmap, emphasizing local AI processing, faster storage, extended battery life, and expanded memory bandwidth tailored for professional users.
