Samsung has unveiled the world’s truly foldable smartphone.
Speaking at its Unpacked event yesterday (Feb 20), the company officially unveiled its latest smartphone, known as the Galaxy Fold.
The device “defies category” according to Samsung, and is a hybrid of the smartphone and tablets we all know and love today.
When folded, the Galaxy Fold has a modest 4.6-inch display designed to fit in the palm of your hand, and when you open it, it sports a stunning 7.3-inch tablet-sized display for more complex tasks – perfect for busy workers who want to consume content on the go.
The tablet is unusual in that it has a hidden hinge with gears underneath the display, and thanks to Samsung’s innovative folding technology, there is a seamless look.

Samsung itself described the product as a luxury device and will sell the model at almost $2,000 in four colors, including black, green, blue, and silver.
Further customization is an option, with the company allowing users to select the color of the hinge, amongst other parts.
Speaking at the keynote, Samsung executives told attendees that they had worked with Google to build applications that could be optimized for dual-display screens.
Google Maps, for example, was demoed at the event, allowing users to see the app on the small screen, and see a wide section of the map, alongside local eateries and attractions, on the tablet.
The Samsung Galaxy Fold has an impressive spec, with a 7-nanometer processor, 12GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage, and a 4,380mAh battery split in two, on either side of the hinge.
The device also comes with six cameras – three on the rear, two on the side, and one on the front – Samsung said that was so users could capture images and videos whichever way the device is folded, making it one of the most camera-heavy smartphones on the market today.
Available in two versions – LTE and 5G – the Samsung Galaxy Fold starts at an eye-watering $1,980 – but you should remember that this is a brand new, flagship product aimed at the premium market.
Samsung will ship the devices from April 26, and each will come with a free pair of Samsung’s Galaxy Buds, an AirPods competitor offering wireless audio streaming.
