Apple is reportedly working with LG on developing a foldable display for the iPhone.
According to DigiTimes, LG has been instructed to work on a folding display, though there’s no guarantee that the company will be the core supplier once production on a model begins.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard that LG is working with Apple on a foldable display. Back in 2016, Apple was one of the first companies to sign up to LG’s new foldable technology, with the technology company reportedly building a “task force” to work on an OLED display that could be folded, and used in devices such as a foldable iPhone or tablet.
Apple has been working on perfecting the foldable display for a couple of years, now, and is also reportedly using prototype displays from Samsung for an iPhone Fold model.
Apple is likely experimenting with screens from both suppliers – and perhaps others – and hasn’t decided on which it will use for the production of the devices. As the technology is in its infancy, Apple might be holding out into further innovations are made to boost performance.
Earlier in the year, it was revealed that Apple’s foldable iPhone was now in development, which backs up years of patents and patent applications where foldable screens have been referenced. Apple could drop its first foldable iPhone in the next couple of years.
