Apple is expected to drop its next-generation AirPods Pro in the third quarter of 2022.
That’s according to an insider with supply chain access, who suggests the company has been working on the follow-up to its hugely successful AirPods Pro. Last month, Apple dropped AirPods 3, bringing them in line with a similar design as the AirPods Pro, and now the company wants to give the Pro models a new lease of life.
Ming-Chi Kuo and Mark Gurman had both already suggested Apple would drop AirPods Pro 2 in 2022, but they didn’t specify a time of the year. This is the first report we’ve heard that suggests a Q3 release.
What can we expect from the new AirPods Pro? Well, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, they’ll be more compact and will eliminate the stem that sticks out. Apple has been working on a design with a rounded shape that ‘fills the user’s ear’ and puts more hardware in the chassis. However, the company has reportedly found it difficult to offer the same battery life and performance as the first-generation model in a smaller form factor, so we don’t know yet what the new version will look like.
A separate report suggests that AirPods Pro 2 will offer fitness tracking built-in, as well as an IPX-4 rated water-resistant MagSafe Charging Case and new skin detect sensors that could offer more accurate pausing and playback.
