Apple will release an Apple TV+ original on DVD and Blu-Ray.
The firm’s comedy On the Rocks will be released on both DVD and Blu-Ray next month, marking the second time an Apple release will be available on physical media. It’s designed to help Apple further differentiate itself from competitors and celebrate the success of some of its most popular titles, though we don’t know yet whether any other Apple TV+ content will be pressed. Movies, like Palmer, seem the most likely candidates.
Users can pre-order the DVD on Amazon, and the physical disc is being distributed by Lionsgate. This means the title will no longer be exclusive to Apple, though it naturally makes more sense to subscribe to the $4.99-per-month service than buy the DVD.
Apple previously released its drama series Defending Jacob on DVD in July through Paramount.
It’s unknown whether the physical release of these titles is part of a contractual agreement between Apple and the makers of each show, or whether Apple’s testing the waters for more physical releases.
