Apple’s Tim Cook warns against the overuse of technology

Head of Apple, Tim Cook, doesn’t believe in the overuse of technology and doesn’t want his nephew on social media.

Cook was talking at Harlow College in Essex, which is one of the 70 educational institutions across Europe that will be adapting his new curriculum. Apple’s Everyone Can Code Curriculum is a new approach to coding that aims to prove that coding is an essential skill that anyone can master. Apple’s website describes the scheme:

“Technology has a language. It’s called code. And we believe coding is an essential skill. Learning to code teaches you how to solve problems and work together in creative ways. And it helps you build apps that bring your ideas to life. We think everyone should have the opportunity to create something that can change the world. So we’ve designed a programme that lets anyone learn, write and teach code.”

Tim Cook stated:

“I think if you had to make a choice, it’s more important to learn coding than a foreign language. I know people who disagree with me on that. But coding is a global language; it’s the way you can converse with 7 billion people,”

However, Tim Cook was keen to point out that while he sees coding as an essential skill, technology should not dominate the classroom.

“I don’t believe in overuse [of technology]. I’m not a person that says we’ve achieved success if you’re using it all the time…I don’t subscribe to that at all”, as reported by The Guardian.

He went on to insist that this is even the case in computer-aided courses such as graphic design. He believes technology should not dominate. To make the point even more clear he stated:

“I don’t have a kid, but I have a nephew that I put some boundaries on. There are some things that I won’t allow; I don’t want them on a social network.”
