More than two years after Steve Jobs announced plans for Apple Campus 2, the city of Cupertino is on the verge of approving the construction of an iconic new headquarters.
The City Council will meet at 5 p.m. Tuesday to hold a formal vote that is largely expected to go in Apple’s favor. The council must vote a second time in November to make the decision official, but that is largely considered a formality.
Over the last two weeks, the city completed a lengthy review process and held two public hearings. Although there were some critics, speakers were overwhelmingly in favor of the project. And the city’s planning department has given its blessing, saying Apple has made enough adjustments to satisfy concerns about traffic and environmental impact.
Apple says the project will be completed in 2016. The project was originally set to be finished in 2015, but Apple had to push the date back once. Even the later date is ambitious given the considerable work ahead of clearing the land and structures on the site.
The new building is expected to be among the most distinctive in Silicon Valley.
Recently, a photographer from the San Jose Mercury News was allowed an exclusive look at the 3-D model Apple has built of the new campus. While 2-D renderings had been widely available, the three-dimensional model shows the campus in a more impressive light. You can see some of those photos in the gallery above.
