Apple’s iPhone range was the most popular smartphone to be unboxed on Christmas Day, with 9 of the top 10 smartphone activations on December 25 being one of the firm’s devices.
According to Flurry Analytics, Christmas Day is the most popular day for new smartphone activations, and this year was no exception. Although the COVID-19 pandemic caused some supply chain issues in the United States and around the world, Apple managed to come out on top of launch five new iPhones – including the second-generation iPhone SE, and the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max, and the more affordable iPhone 12 mini.
Although smartphone activations were down on last year, with 23% fewer new devices activated on Christmas Day compared with 2019, Apple still managed to come out on top.
The company used data from more than one million apps which offered insights on two billion devices to determine which new devices were the most popular, and the iPhone won.
On Christmas Day, nine of the ten most activated smartphone products were iPhones, with the iPhone 11 the most popular, the iPhone XR coming in second place, and the iPhone Pro Max coming in third place.
The iPhone 12, 11 Pro Max, SE, and 12 Pro follow, whilst the iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone 8 are also in the top ten. The only device to feature in the Top 10 not manufactured by Apple was LG’s K30, a smartphone that retails for less than $200.
What’s perhaps most interesting to note about this data is that Apple’s new iPhone 12 mini does not feature in the top ten list, suggesting that it didn’t sell well in the months leading up to Christmas.
Some have criticized the smaller device as, whilst it’s marketed as a budget smartphone, it’s only $100 cheaper than the iPhone 12 which offers better value for money.
