Apple might have released its first 5G-enabled smartphones this October, but it might be a few years before consumers can begin to feel the full benefits of the new technology.

According to Ericsson, around one billion people will have access to 5G technology before the end of the year, with the rollout happening faster than the company expected.

However, it’ll take until 2026 before the superfast technology can reach 60% of the global population.

The networking giant said that these figures make 5G the fastest deployed mobile network ever, adding that, by the end of 2020, there’ll be 218 million 5G subscriptions around the world, up from the company’s forecast of 190 million back in June.

Speaking of the success of the 5G rollout so far, Patrick Cerwall, head of strategic marketing insights at Ericsson, said: “5G coverage will be built out to the extent that 1 billion people will live in 5G coverage areas by the end of 2020 worldwide. “That’s around 15% of the world’s population.”

According to Ericsson, the availability of affordable 5G smartphones has helped to fuel the rise in adoption, and many companies have received government subsidies as part of their 5G rollout, speeding up deployment. The third reason for the speedy rollout of 5G is that network carriers are competing against their rivals to win over new customers.
