Apple has today revealed that it is “on pace” for over 10 million sales of the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus over the opening weekend later this month – and to beat the previous iPhone first weekend record set only last year.
In a statement to CNBC, the company reported: “Customer response to iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus has been extremely positive and preorders this weekend were very strong around the world”. It added that “online demand for iPhone 6S Plus has been exceptionally strong and exceeded our own forecasts for the preorder period”, but reassured that “we will have iPhone 6S Plus as well as iPhone 6S units available at Apple retail stores when they open next Friday.”
BTIG analyst Walter Piecyk observed to CNBC that, as last year’s preorders opened on a Thursday night while this year’s began on Friday night due to the later Labor Day, Apple might wait until the end of Monday for a total number of preorders that it is willing to compare to 2014’s equivalent figure. However, he said that the “great” addition of 3D Touch in the new phones will “save you time, and that’s what people really care about.”
