Apple to bring SD card reader to new MacBook Pro models

Apple is reportedly planning to bring back SD card readers to its new MacBook Pro models.

Reliable insider Ming-Chi Kuo last week set out his expectations for the company’s new MacBook Pro models, suggesting that MagSafe would make a return and that Apple would remove the Touch Bar in favour of a traditional function keypad. Now, it appears that Apple is planning to reintroduce another popular feature: an SD card reader onto the MacBook.

According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, Apple will bring back an SD card reader so that professional users can transfer photographs and use the card reader for storing files. “The upcoming MacBook Pro is an example of Apple’s renewed focus on Mac loyalists,” Gurman said in a recent post.

“The company is planning to bring back an SD card slot for the next MacBook Pros so users can insert memory cards from digital cameras. That feature was removed in 2016, to the consternation of professional photographers and video creators, key segments of the MacBook Pro user base.”

The current MacBook Pro models feature Thunderbolt ports, which means that photographers and professionals need to use a dock or an adapter to access an SD card reader and most of their external devices, as Thunderbolt hasn’t been widely adopted.

Last week, Kuo said that “users may not need to purchase additional dongles” when they buy a new MacBook Pro, suggesting that multiple ports will be making a return. Back in 2015, Apple released a MacBook Pro with USB-A and HDMI ports as standard, and though we’re unlikely to see USB-A make a return, we could indeed see other port introductions.

Apple is expected to release its next MacBook Pros, which will feature upgraded versions of the new M1 chip in the third quarter of this year. Are you excited? Let us know and check back soon for more news and rumors on everything Apple, here on AppleMagazine.com.
