In another example of the emerging possibilities with drone technology, the Drone Racing League officially launched today, having raised $8 million to develop “the sport of the future”.
The DRL, the investors of which include Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross and Muse lead singer Matthew Bellamy, has hailed – in the words of the company’s founder and CEO Nicholas Horbaczewski – “the start of a new sport, designed to bring audiences into the race with custom content”.
The drone racing that audiences can look forward to could, implies MarketWatch, involve drones zipping through such elaborate terrain as abandoned malls, subway tunnels and NFL stadiums. The drones, moving at over 80 miles per hour, would be remotely controlled by pilots wearing goggles showing a live video feed from the machine’s “cockpit”.
The DRL, which will air its debut drone race on YouTube on February 22, hopes to grow along with this new sport’s wider fan base. Their case is, however, just one of many showing how drone technology is flourishing.
