Apple could change the iconic design of its all-in-one iMac for the first time in eight years, according to Bloomberg, offering “the most striking visual update to any Apple product”.
Insiders suggest that Apple will introduce a new flat back-design, remove the metal chin from the machine, and reduce the borders on the display, making the iMac look more like the Apple Pro Display XDR, which comes in at $5,000 and is designed for professionals.
Apple is reportedly readying the release of two new iMacs this year, replacing the current 21.5-inch and 27-inch models, and though we don’t know exactly whether the new design will fall in line with the previous generation, it’s likely that one will be smaller than the other.
Though the design of the new iMac will likely be a key talking point, it’s what’s on the inside that counts. According to the report, Apple is reportedly planning to use its ARM-based chips inside of the new iMac, though it’ll likely be a superpowered version of the current M1 chip.
Alongside the iMac, Apple is reportedly replacing the Mac Pro desktop with a new M1-powered version and be “half the size” of the current Mac Pro, designed for professionals tight on space. A new lower-priced external monitor, which will sit under the Pro Display XDR brand, will also be available at around $1,000 rather than $5,000.
