Apple working on ‘complete redesign’ of iPhone for 2022

Apple will reportedly overhaul the design of the iPhone next year.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and his Power On newsletter, the Cupertino company is working on a new look iPhone for 2022, which will see a new entry-level model, the scrapping of the iPhone mini variant, and new Pro models that will encourage users to upgrade their devices following the success of the iPhone 12 last year.

He added that the ‘minor changes’ for the 2021 variants mean that bigger things would be coming soon.

It’s not the first time we’ve heard that Apple could be working on a redesigned iPhone for 2022, with Ming-Chi Kuo previously suggesting that the company was planning to drop the notch from the iPhone next year. The firm will instead work on a punch-hole design, a pattern that has already been followed by a number of other brands.

Reliable leaker Jon Prosser has also suggested that Apple will introduce a new punch-hole design to the iPhone.

As well as getting rid of the mini iPhone, Apple is expected to change the naming structure of its new devices and launch two iPhone Pro models, one standard iPhone model, and an iPhone Max model.

It had previously been suggested that Apple would bring under-display Touch ID to the iPhone, but this has now been sidelined, with the company expected to bring it into the 2023 or 2024 iPhone instead. It’s thought that the technology to support this is not yet ready, and Apple wants to perfect it before publicly releasing it.

It’s also thought that the company is working on a foldable iPhone, set for release in the coming years.
