Apple announces Amazon Alexa competitor, the Apple HomePod

Apple is ready to take on Amazon Alexa and Google Home with its brand new HomePod, announced this morning (June 5).

The Cupertino firm has promised to “reinvent home music” with the new wireless speaker, which measures in at just seven inches.

“Apple reinvented portable music with iPod and now HomePod will reinvent how we enjoy music wirelessly throughout our homes,” said Philip Schiller, at WWDC 2017.

“HomePod packs powerful speaker technology, Siri intelligence and wireless access to the entire Apple Music library into a beautiful speaker that is less than 7 inches tall, can rock most any room with distortion-free music and be a helpful assistant around your home.”

The device, which is powered by Apple’s A8 chip and feature Siri integration, will launch this December for $349. The pod will be available in white and space grey and will be available exclusively in the UK, the USA, and Australia for the preliminary launch.

The device will not only work with your Apple Music subscription, but it also incorporates Siri, meaning you’ll be able to access weather, alarms, sports, traffic, stocks, podcasts, reminders and messages wherever you are in your home – all without picking up a device.

What’s more, the HomePod will work with HomeKit-powered tech in your home, so you’ll be able to control your home accessories.

We’ll be bringing you more from Apple’s WWDC event as and when we get it. Stay tuned to AppleMagazine.com.
